Sep 24, Ephesus

Hi everyone!  This next visit to ancient Ephesus was FABULOUS!  We all were taken by what we have learned and seen here!

The colonnades (pillars of columns in the background) outline a major street in Ephesus.  What you see in the foreground are the excavated ruins of the civic center area of Ephesus.

Here is a closeup of a section of the colonnade and our tour guide, Baris, who is explaining how the colonnades are assemble.

This is a Roman theater that was built in the 2nd century.  It is the smaller of two in Ephesus.  The larger one is yet to come.

We are on one of the major streets running through Ephesus.  Along the outside of the rows of colonnades are where the commerce shops are that line along side the street.

These are entrances into the shops alongside the colonnaded streets:

This is the Celsus Library, built in 110 AD by Aquila (of Acts 18).

On the steps of the Library were found incriptions of a menorah (a Jewish seven branched candlestick) and.....

....a sign of the followers of the Way (the Jesus followers).  Remember from yesterday's email about the first christian symbol?

A view from the steps of the Library:

This is the entrance dedicated to Roman Emperor Hadrian.

And we're walking....

One more to come....
